Ritchie, A7: one of only 134 copies thus. (The other issue, of 506 copies, had a red spine label). According to Ritchie’s bibliography, copies with a green spine label were of a later issue, but he has since revised this opinion. In a letter written to ourselves in November 1997 he records his acquisition of a presentation copy to Cyril Beaumont, inscribed by the author on 31st October 1924, ten days only after the book was published, which has a green label: he now thinks there may be no priority of issue.

SPENDER (Stephen). Vienna. Faber and Faber, 1934. GB £60.00

US $81.00

The inscription on the front end-paper is dated ‘19 xii 34’. The book was published in November. We have had three copies of this book over the years: one with two blanks before the half-title; one (a family copy, evidently given to Spender as a reject) with two blanks before the title-page, the half-title following it; and the present copy in which the blank and half-title are a conjugate pair, and the title a single inset leaf. It looks as though there was something amiss with the way the prelims. were laid out in the form, but why the title-page ended up as a single inset is difficult to guess.

Fisher Unwin, (Limited), 1 Adelphi Terrace, 1918. Leaf bearing signature mark ‘A’ on recto and ‘The Talbot Press Books’ woodcut device on verso precedes half-title; photogravure frontispiece with tissue guard; five line Errata slip tipped in before Todhunter’s Preface; pp.xxiv+115+[i (blank)]+iv (Notes); diagonally fine ribbed dark blue-green cloth, ruled and lettered gilt on front cover, lettered gilt on spine. GB £160.00

US $216.00

Prepared for the press by Todhunter before his death in the Autumn of 1916, as his Preface makes clear, but published posthumously, with the added biographical and critical introduction by Rolleston, this volume contains all his Irish poems, with the exception of “Three Irish Bardic Tales". Some of the poems are reprinted from “The Banshee and other poems” or from anthologies, but the majority are here first printed. A very scarce book in our experience, that may have been printed short because of the war. Todhunter was at school in York.

‘The Dawn’ is a reprint of the Arthur Symons translation of 1898; the other three plays are here first published in English, ‘The Cloister’ being translated by Osman Edwards, ‘Philip II’ by F.S. Flint, and Helen of Sparta by Jethro Bithell. The present volume once belonged to S. Esmé Percy, who was responsible for the first English production of ‘The Cloister’ at The Gaiety Theatre, Manchester, on 3rd October, 1910, and again, in conjunction with Kirsteen Graeme, for its revival on tour in 1916, this being the translation then used. His performance in the 1910 production is commended here in Osman Edwards’s Preface. Loosely laid in (and once held in place by the now vanished paper clip) are two copies of a flier for the 1916 production. S Esmé Percy’s signature and address appear on the front end-paper. Loosely laid in also is a programme for a production of Offenbach’s Tales of Hoffman at the Royal Lyceum Theatre, Edinburgh, in which Percy also appeared. An interesting association copy.
